Batterup Hanover, like five Toronto Blue Jay batters in Seattle on Wednesday, Oct. 15, knocked it out of the park in the $10,000 Horses & Geldings Preferred Pace at Flamboro Downs for his second straight win.
Jason Ryan slid the gelding into fifth coming off the first turn with Palladium Hanover (Samuel Fillion) on top to the quarter in :27.1. Batterup Hanover was the first horse off the cones midway around the second bend, kicking off a methodical first-over march through the half in :56.4 that took him to the lead past three-quarters in 1:25.1. Once clear, he continued to pour it on, sprinting clear by 4-1/2 lengths to win in 1:53.2. Palladium Hanover held second over the closing Pipewrench Charlie (Travis Cullen).
Batterup Hanover is now four-for-four at Flamboro Downs, with two wins in the past two weeks in addition to a pair of victories last November. The seven-year-old son of Betting Line-Beachbunny Hanover has won 31 of 108 career outings and has earned $173,720. Ben Hollingsworth trains him for owners Debbie Francis of Sweets Corner, N.S., Rosanne Langille of Lower Onslow, N.S., Douglas Lowthers of Inverness, N.S., and Chantel Langille of Montague, P.E.I. The winner paid $2.60 at the windows.
Trainer Jodie Cullen was the other star of the card with a trio of winners, all driven by her son, Travis Cullen. Canada’s leading conditioner in wins got her victories with Phone Nine One One ($3.10) in the third race off a tough final-quarter grind, Waitinonawoman ($2.10), who took her third straight score in the eighth, and Yourtheone ($2.10) in wire-to-wire fashion in the finale. Jodie Cullen extended her lead in the Flamboro standings to 14 over Francis Guillemette, and she is now 42 tallies ahead of Kyle Fellows on the national leaderboard.
