Driver Trevor Henry threaded B Stoney through tiring horses to pull a 37-1 stunner in the $225,000 Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) Super Final for three-year-old pacing colts on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Stag Party pushed for position from the outermost post in the field of seven but opted to sit the pocket past a :26 first quarter as Best In Show circled to the lead. Century Farroh sat third up the backstretch until Bronx Seelster forced the 1-2 favourite to flush first over past a :53.4 half, prompting Fixed Idea to fan three wide as he rolled towards the top circling the final turn.
Best In Show turned past three-quarters in 1:22.1 clinging to the lead but drifting from the cones. Stag Party slid through the seam inside and gained enough separation to create a hole for B Stoney to slip through in the final sixteenth. B Stoney nailed Stag Party at the finish of a 1:50.3 mile while Century Farroh settled for third.
When asked if he thought he had a chance to win, Henry after the race said, “To be truthful no. I said to the guy before we were going out they really got to race hard, two got to race bad and we’ll have to have a lot of luck. I just wanted to go the shortest route—I was hoping to get a cheque and everything opened up through the stretch. It all just worked out.”
Returning $77.30 to win, B Stoney won his fourth race from 14 starts this season and his sixth from 23 overall, earning $220,632. Murray Brethour conditions and co-owns the son of Sunfire Blue Chip with breeder Douglas Millard and Barry McClennan.
