With yearling sale season in full swing, those owners headed to the sale in Harrisburg next month might be thrown a curve ball in terms of potential competition for some of their purchases with a new owner in the game.
As the players on the New York Yankees have concluded their 2023 seasons, star pitcher Nestor Cortes will start researching some Standardbred pedigrees.
"I’m looking for a yearling," Cortes said in a recent interview with NJ.com when discussing his plans for the offseason. "There is an auction going on in middle of November. Hopefully, I’ll get one and it’ll be racing in April or May."
Cortes, who grew up near Hialeah Park Race Track in Florida, shares an interest in racing with Yankees assistant equipment manager and amateur harness driver Joe Lee, and visited The Meadowlands this past summer to watch older pacer Tam Major A, a horse they owned and have since sold.
Adding flair to the ball game with his custom cleat collection, Cortes has gone viral sporting different designs and has been spotted on the mound donning a pair with his Standardbred racehorse and sulky.
