Woodbine Mohawk Park will feature the finale of the 2022 Ontario Sires Stakes program, hosting the eight Super Finals for the provincial program's brightest stars on Saturday evening (Oct. 15).
A total of $1.8 million in purses will be up for grabs as top trotters and pacers from the Gold level of the provincial program showdown at the Campbellville, Ont. oval.
Here's a preview of what fans can look forward to this Saturday evening:
$225,000 OSS Super Final - Two-Year-Old Filly Trot
The Saturday evening opener features a hefty field of 10 fillies going to the gate.
Righteous Resolve, trained by John Bax, will be seeking her seventh win in a row from post position three. The Resolve-Motown Muscle filly has $423,724 banked with a record of 7-1-0 in eight starts. Victories in three OSS Gold starts, the Peaceful Way elimination and final, and the Champlain have marked an impressive resume for her freshman year. Two starts after her 1:53.1 win in the Champlain, Righteous Resolve and Paul MacDonell will be looking to add another title to their collection.
$225,000 OSS Super Final - Two-Year-Old Colt Trot
Osceola, a Gregg McNair trainee, will set sail out of post seven with Doug McNair in the bike. After a shaky first start in the series, Osceola has led the ranks of his division with three OSS Gold Series victories in four starts and $153,750 earned. He is a Muscle Mass colt out of the Conway Hall mare Armbro Exquisite.
Dowedealinandwhy, a Wheeling N Dealin gelding out of the Deweycheatumnhowe mare Gaelic Princess, has had three wins in his short season of six starts with $125,819 in earnings. Of his five OSS Gold Series starts, he has finished with two wins and a second. Scott Zeron returns to his former stomping grounds and will be in the bike for trainer Rob Fellows.
John Bax sends three of his talented trainees out in the two-year-old colt division. Deadline Hall will be driven by Chris Christoforou out of the post three, Paul MacDonell drives Snowpiercer from post eight, and Matt Bax leads Oh Look Magic from post position nine.
$225,000 OSS Super Final - Three-Year-Old Filly Trot
A short field of six makes up the three-year-old filly trot division, with five fabulous fillies looking to knock off last year's Super Final champion.
Adare Castle, trained by Mark Etsell, seeks to score out of post two with James MacDonald in the bike. The Muscle Mass filly out of the Andover Hall mare Pacific Edge holds the lead in the Gold Series standings. In 20 lifetime starts, she has had 14 wins and five seconds with nearly $1.1 million in earnings. Her last start in the fifth leg of the OSS Gold Series was a new lifetime mark of 1:52.4 taken at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
$225,000 OSS Super Final - Two-Year-Old Filly Pace
Cheesy Smile, a Betterthancheddar-Frame Worthy filly, has $204,447 in earnings as a freshman with a record of 4-2-0 in nine starts. She is trained by John Pentland and will be driven by Bob McClure. Her record of 3-2-0 in five OSS starts places her at the top of her class.
Big Big Plans, with a record of 2-0-2 in five OSS starts, holds second in stats on the leadership podium. Trevor Henry will drive the Bob Mcintosh trainee looking to add to her lifetime collection of $211,148 in earnings.
$225,000 OSS Super Final - Three-Year-Old Filly Pace
Nick Gallucci trains three Millar Farms-owned entries in the three-year-old filly pace division, and they hold three of the top four positions on the Gold Series leaderboard.
Number one in Gold Series rankings and in post four is Silver Label, a Bettors Delight-Hidden Gem filly with $660,424 in career earnings. Her record of 11-5-0 in 19 lifetime starts and lifetime mark of 1:50.4 makes her a standout filly in her field of 10. Doug McNair will drive Silver Label in her redemption race after a solid second place finish behind stablemate Prohibition Legal in the 2021 OSS Super Final.
Velvet Stinger, second in the Gold Series ranks, has had a breakout year as a sophomore with $256,557 in earnings and eight wins in 13 starts. Her most notable victory in the Simcoe was a new lifetime mark in 1:51. Louis-Philippe Roy will drive the Bettors Delight-Our Hot Majorette filly.
Prohibition Legal, winner of her freshman OSS Super Final and fourth in Gold Series standings, keeps James MacDonald at the controls in a hunt for a repeat finish in the season finale. The daughter of Big Jim-Catch A Wish has $726,376 in career earnings, a lifetime mark of 1:50.4, and a record of 9-3-2 in 15 starts.
$225,000 OSS Super Final - Three-Year-Old Colt Trot
A field of 10 in the three-year-old colt trot features a set of noteworthy competitors.
James MacDonald will drive the Scott McEneny trainee Twin B Archie, looking to add to a season record of 6-3-0 in 11 starts. Of his $741,431 in career earnings, over 60 per cent was earned in his sophomore year with wins in the SBOA elimination and final, Goodtimes elimination, Simcoe, and two OSS Gold Series legs. A son of Archangel and the Deweycheatumnhowe mare Affair Hall, Twin B Archie holds a lengthy lead in the Gold Series ranks and flaunts a 1:53.1 lifetime mark.
Duly Resolved holds second in the Gold Series leaderboard in his sophomore year after a triumphant freshman year, which featured starts in the OSS Gold Series, Champlain, William Wellwood Memorial, Mohawk Million, and Breeders Crown. The 2021 O'Brien Award winner is a full brother to Righteous Resolve and another John Bax trainee. Winner of $828,367, the gelding has a record of 7-7-1 in 24 lifetime starts. Paul MacDonell will be in the bike behind the trotter that just set an all-age track record at Western Fair in his most recent outing.
$225,000 OSS Super Final - Two-Year-Old Colt Pace
Stockade Seelster has curated a record of 7-0-1 in eight starts for trainer Ian Moore. A $45,000 purchase out of the London Select Sale, the colt has gone on to win $742,600 with stellar performances in all four OSS Gold Series starts, the $900,000 Metro Pace Final, and the second leg and final of the Dream Maker.
The son of State Treasurer-Soiree Seelster won in an OSS record 1:49.3 a few starts ago and looks to score again out of post three with driver Jody Jamieson at the controls.
$225,000 OSS Super Final - Three-Year-Old Colt Pace
Fresh off a new lifetime mark in 1:49.3 in his last start, St Lads Sterling and driver Louis-Philippe Roy enter the Super Final as a serious threat from post seven. The Jean Tourigny trainee has five wins and $220,544 in career earnings. With a record of 2-1-1 in five Gold Series starts, St Lads Sterling holds second in Gold Series standings.
Kolby Two Step faces not only nine other challengers, but the obstacle of the post nine for the finale. A trainee of Tim Gillespie, the Betterthancheddar-Dancing Heart gelding sits third in Gold Series rankings. He has $285,491 bankrolled with five career wins and his lifetime mark of 1:49.2 is just one click faster than leading St Lads Sterling. James MacDonald will be at the controls.
