A spokesperson for the family of Down Under harness driver Ricky May, who suffered a mid-race collapse while in the sulky last week, has provided an update on the condition of the 61-year-old horseman.

According to an article by stuff.co.nz, May has been sitting up in his hospital bed in Dunedin, New Zealand and is expected to be flown back to Christchurch, his home town, at some point this week.

May suffered what has only publicly been referred to as a ‘medical incident’ while in the race bike on Thursday, January 2. The incident occurred while May was driving A Gs White Socks in the Group 3 Central Otago Cup at Omakau in southern New Zealand. May collapsed in the sulky and fell to the track during the race, which was abandoned along with the rest of the program.

On Monday, January 6, Craig Wiggins, the spokesperson for the family, said that May is "in really good form,” although he is a bit bruised and battered from the ordeal.

Wiggins did not identify what medical issue May suffered or is suffering from, but he did state that "it's quite a common thing that he's got” and that May is "going to be a lot healthier."

In looking forward to the next steps in the process, Wiggins explained that the horseman will "be flown back to Christchurch in a couple of days, undergo a small operation and then a few weeks rest, then back to the normal fit Ricky May that we used to know."

Please join Standardbred Canada in wishing May a speedy and complete recovery from his injuries and surgery.
