Corey Callahan joined the 4,000-win club Tuesday at Dover Downs thanks to a sixth race victory with trotting gelding U B.
Callahan entered the 15-race program needing just a pair of wins to achieve the milestone, and he chopped his ‘magic number’ in half after capturing Race 3 with Holiday Spirit in 1:58.4.
He treated U B to a ground-saving trip just three races later, and those tactics worked out perfectly as the John Wilkerson pupil sprung loose late and used a :28.4 closing kick to give Callahan his 4,000th win. He tacked on another triumph with On The Edgeofglory in Race 13 to bring his career win total to 4,001.
The 36-year-old Callahan, a graduate of the University of Kentucky, became a driver at a rather older age in his mid-20s though from a harness family on both his father and mother’s families. Callahan, a top 10- finisher in wins and money won in 2014, has been the track leading driver for the past five meets and currently leads Dover Downs in driving wins with 104 and more than $1-million in purses earned by horses he has driven.
