New York Racing Association President Charles Hayward has gone on the record as saying that he is surprised with the turnout and wagering popularity of the Aqueduct racetrack for thoroughbreds, which has seen its numbers go up during a time of industry upheaval and terrible weather in
the state.
An article by The Saratogian explains that the raceway has seen its on-track handle rise 56.5 per cent, its wagering via telephone betting spike 70 per cent, and its internet wagering jump 150 per cent, all while its attendance figures are on the increase, too.
“We are extremely pleased with everything at this point,” Hayward was quoted as saying.
He went on to say, “It's still early, but if you had told me we could draw new fans to Aqueduct in winter, I never would have believed it.”
