Less than one month into 2015 -- a time when hopes remain high for the racing season -- harness driver Jim Marino already knows this year will not turn out how he envisioned it.

Marino suffered extensive injuries to his left leg and wrist during a racing accident last Friday, January 23 at Fraser Downs and faces a long road to recovery.

Marino told Trot Insider that he underwent surgery at Royal Columbian Hospital to repair his ACL and the other collateral ligament in his left knee in addition to having screws inserted to help mend a broken femur bone. Marino also broke both bones in his left wrist requiring a plate and screws for corrective healing.

"They aren't telling me much about going home," said Marino on Wednesday afternoon, noting that he may require another surgery. "Maybe a couple weeks then maybe to a rehab center or home. [The doctor] said [to stay] off the leg for eight weeks. I asked 'when can I drive again?' and he said aim for five months."

With word spreading of his lengthy layoff, support from family, friends and fellow racing participants has been pouring in for the Surrey, B.C. horseman.

"People are great here and so many people are calling and visiting, it really helps the days go by," said Marino. "Fraser Downs' season is a write off, but maybe I can try and drive at the new track in Balzac this summer."

Marino has won 1,883 races in his driving career. Last year, he made it to the National Driving Championship and won multiple stakes races in Western Canada, including three B.C. Sires Stakes Finals and an Alberta Sires Stakes Super Final.

Fundraising activities are being arranged by members of the racing industry to assist Marino with his expenses throughout his recovery. Monetary donations can now be made by clicking here.

Harness Racing B.C. has announced that driver Bill Davis, who found himself surrounded by support from the equine community after losing 17 horses in a tragic barn fire last year, is returning the gesture to a fellow horseman in need and will be donating his driving fees from Sunday, February 1 to Marino. He is also challenging his fellow drivers to do the same.

In addition, a local "Burger and Beer Night" fundraiser will take place on Sunday, March 1 at Samz Neighbourhood Pub in Surrey. Beginning at 6 p.m., the event will include a silent auction and toonie toss in addition to 50/50 and raffle draws.

Please join Standardbred Canada in wishing Marino a full and speedy recovery.
