A series of seven qualifiers went to gate on a blustery morning at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Friday (Jan. 28).
Coming all the way from Alberta, Nate Sobey visited Woodbine Mohawk Park as part of his Ontario residency and steered two winners on the card. One of them was Uchasemikissm, a six-year-old Mystery Chase gelding who posted the quickest pacing mile of the session. Sobey's pupil sat third as Rockme Rollme posted splits of :29, :59.3 and 1:29.3 before making his move off the turn. Uchasemikissm stayed alongside Rockme Rollme through the stretch and eventually stuck a head in front to stop the clock in 1:57.3.
Sobey's other winner, Whatineedisaman, went the second-quickest pacing mile of the session. She clocked a mile in 1:59 when winning by a length over Marvelous Kiss.
Speed-badge honours on the trot went to Bautista, going a 2:00.4 mile from gate to finish for driver Trevor Henry and trainer Gerard Demers. The seven-year-old Muscle Hill stallion secured the lead from post 5 and led through a clip of :29.4, 1:01.3 and 1:32.2 before kicking clear and winning by three lengths over Aworldly Goodtimes.
