A schedule change that had Cal-Expo racing on Wednesdays instead of Sundays, all set to begin this Wednesday, January 27, has fallen victim at this time to a national trend that many racetracks are fighting.
“With the cancellation of Thursdays by Los Alamitos, our current overpayment, and the concern of fewer available racehorses which lowers our per-race average field size, we regrettably had to reduce the weekly schedule earlier than anticipated,” stated Dave Elliott, director of racing for Cal-Expo. “We remain hopeful that our field size average and hence the interest and handle in our program will turn around during these difficult economic times."
Live racing resumes at Cal-Expo on Thursday, January 28 and continues through Saturday, January 30. First-race post times are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. (PST). On Thursday, a carryover of $4,981.71 will be added into the Early Super High 5 Pool (Race 3). Total estimated pool is $20,000!
Additionally, on Thursday Cal Expo will host a no entry fee, Mid-Week Madness Handicapping Tourney at participating California satellite wagering facilities, racetracks, and casinos. Ten thousand dollars in total prize money will be offered.
