Peenie resurfaced at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday evening following a two-race stint in New Jersey at the Meadowlands, and he made the most of the opportunity for owner/trainer Colin Johnson of Le Gardeur, Quebec
.
The five-year-old son of Real Artist squared off with six foes in the $12,000 Preferred Handicap, and a perfect trip from second-over helped him notch his first win of the season and the 21st of his career.
Race favourite Did It Again, who was looking for back-to-back wins in the Preferred, laid down early fractions of :26.4 and :56.1 before coming under attack from Priceless Edition. Just one length separated those two as the third fraction rang up in 1:24, and Peenie was poised to pounce on the pair of them from second-over.
When Denis St. Pierre pulled the trigger on Peenie he responded with a :28.4 final frame, which was more than enough to post the one-length score over Did It Again in 1:53.1. Priceless Edition held on to grab the show dough. The victory was one of three on the card for conditioner Colin Johnson.
Peenie, who has banked in excess of $255,000 in his career, did plenty of roadwork last season. He raced 39 times and visited seven different tracks – the Meadowlands, Saratoga, Rideau Carleton, Mohawk, Yonkers, Vernon Downs and Woodbine.
