Driver Aaron Byron scored his 1,000th career win behind Ciona Bromach in the 11th race at Flamboro Downs on Sunday evening.
After getting away sixth from post five in the field of eight, Byron tipped the six-year-old Peruvian Hanover gelding second over and rallied home off the cover of Machness (Lorne House) to win in 1:56.1. Favourite St Pete Star (Phil Hudon) followed from third over to place, one and a quarter lengths behind, while longshot Onemorelastchance (Jason Brewer) closed from last to third.
The 5-2 second choice, who is owned, bred and trained by Debbie O'Brien Moran, paid $7.20 to win.
The milestone victory for Byron pushed his career purse earnings to more than $7.86 million. The 28-year-old resident of Cambridge, Ont., who has made 10 trips to the winner's circle so far in 2013, won a career-high 191 races last season while earning over $1.45 million in purses.
