Trot Insider has learned that standardbred owner/breeder Roy Steele has captured an Eclipse Award for his role in covering this year’s Breeders Cup
with the Horse Racing Radio Network.
Steele, who is handicapper for both breeds, provided backstretch stories each morning along with live on-air information from the paddock before each race during this year’s Breeders Cup at Churchill Downs.
“I’m on a mission to spread the sport to the thoroughbred world, and I guess I will get an opportunity at the awards dinner on July 17 in Miami,” said Steele, who currently has three standardbreds in training. “I have two trotters and a two-year-old pacer in training with Steve Roberts of Melbourne. Steve has been an absolute pleasure to work with getting me up to speed in my continuing crossover of the two sports. I also have a broodmare in foal to I Am A Fool.”
“The two-year-old we have is interesting in the respect we have named him Oldfriendskentucky after Old Friends - a Kentucky facility for retired thoroughbreds,” added Steele. “A portion of the winnings by two-year-old, who is a Whosurboy colt, will go to Old Friends. In return, they will accept standardbred retirees and let me access his database to spread the gospel.”
Please join Standardbred Canada in offering congratulations to Roy and the other members of the Horse Racing Radio Network for their Eclipse Award-winning work.
