Steward Chair Targeted In Shooting

The home of Racing Victoria’s chief steward, Terry Bailey, was riddled with gunfire last fall in a brazen display of intimidation against a senior racing judge. According to a recent article, a similar incident occurred this past weekend.

The article, which appears on racingpost.com, explains that Marcus Weedon, who is the chairman of the stewards at the Nicosia Race Club in Cyprus, was driving home Sunday night when his vehicle was shot at.

"They shot at the car and were pretty close to it, although I didn't see who did it,” the 40-year-old Weeden was quoted as saying.

“They shot through the small window at the back of the car. I had just turned right when the shot happened so the car was barely moving. I think if they'd wanted to hit me it would have been very easy to do it, and I think it was some kind of warning."

Weeden has stated that he will not be relinquishing his position in light of the shooting.

He was quoted as saying that he believes the shooting came in light of his stance on some harder-line rules for racing.

"We're taking a more severe line in the sport based on some guidelines I wrote when I worked in Cyprus towards the end of 2014 and I think I may have upset the wrong person.”

The incident is somewhat similar to what happened to Bailey last October Down Under. Nobody was injured when an unknown individual fired six shots into the front door of Bailey’s home.
