O’Brien Award finalist San Pail clobbered nine rivals in Monday’s $125,000 final of the Glorys Comet Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack, and in doing so he extended his winning streak to nine in a row
.
While others took turns batting on the lead, driver Randy Waples was in no hurry whatsoever with San Pail who tucked into the four-hole. Pembroke Prayer and Define The World exchanged punches past the opening mark in :26.3 before the latter cleared to the lead. As soon as Define The World cleared, Pembroke Prayer came right back around for the retake.
Waples made a snap move shortly after the field entered the backstretch, and he and the two-time Maple Leaf Trot champ took over the role of pacesetter shortly past the mid-way point in :56.3. San Pail trotted by the three-quarter pole in 1:25.2 before turning on the jets and trotting away from the field in the final quarter of the rich event. A 28-second final frame propelled San Pail to the 4-1/4 length score over Action Broadway in a stakes record clocking of 1:53.2. Pembroke Prayer was third.
Trained by Rod Hughes, who co-owns the seven-year-old son of San Pellegrino with his breeder, Glenn Van Camp of Port Perry, ON, San Pail is now 2-for-2 this season after assembling a 13-for-15 record in 2010.
“He raced super tonight,” said Hughes. “Randy (Waples) said he had another second in him which is also a great feeling. He’s done now until May. I’m not going to race him all winter with the Maple Leaf Trot and Breeders Crown hosted here in the spring and fall. He’s as sharp now as he could be so he will get some much deserved time off."
The winning payday bumped San Pail’s career earnings to $1,793,965.
