River Lass converted from the pocket to win the Northlands Park's top pace for fillies and mares for the second straight week while completing a training-driving triple for horseman Kelly Hoerdt
.
River Lass followed Wrangler Raine (Rene Goulet) through early fractions of :29.3 and :59 before sweeping to command in the featured $8,500 Fillies & Mares Preferred Handicap Pace. The popular five-year-old mare then opened up a two length lead on her five foes as she raced by three-quarters in 1:27. Down the stretch, Wrangler Raine gave it another go as she found room up the rail, but River Lass beat her to the wire with a half-length to spare. The winning time was 1:56 flat. Shoplifter Hanover (Jamie Gray) rallied three-wide from the backfield to grab third.
River Lass paid $3.90 to win for the 18th time in her career. The 2010 Alberta Horse of the Year is now two-for-two in 2012 and two-for-four since returning to Alberta after a six-month long campaign on the Woodbine Entertainment Group circuit in Ontario. Tonight's victory pushed her career bankroll to $257,676.
Hoerdt also scored with Spring Baby ($5) and upsetter Dees Promise ($49) earlier on the 10-race card.
