Prominent Prince Edward Island breeder Owen MacLean remains in hospital in Charlottetown after being seriously injured when kicked by a horse on New Year’s Day
.
“He is improving and was able to take solid food for the first time today,” his wife Donna told Atlantic Post Calls on Tuesday.
Mrs. MacLean says the family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the harness racing industry. “It has just been wonderful,” she said.
MacLean has undergone two operations at Queen Elizabeth Hospital after he was admitted in critical condition after being kicked by a horse on his Fairview, PEI farm near Charlottetown.
His wife said the accident happened when MacLean was attempting to round up the horse who had got loose.
MacLean’s farm at Fairview has been a popular stallion station for years. He stands Harrods, a full brother to Abercrombie, and the Cam Fella stallion Toofunnyforwords.
Donna MacLean says the horse that kicked her husband was a border. “He wasn’t a nasty horse. It appeared he just became excited.’ she said.
MacLean has been removed from the extensive care unit, but it will be some time before he can be released.
