Flamboro Downs' popular Announcer Idol contest returned at the Dundas, Ontario track on Sunday night for the second edition, with Giant FM's Mike Tyler the first to give a call.
Every Sunday night through March 22, a different, local broadcast media personality will step into the booth alongside track announcer Gary Guy and call the evening’s third race. At the end of March, Flamboro’s fans and patrons will have their say by visiting the track's website to vote for their favourite race call. The winning announcer will receive a donation to the local charity of their choice, compliments of Flamboro Downs and Great Canadian Gaming.
Last year's inaugural edition of Announcer Idol was won by Y10's Brian West, who donated his winnings to Y108 Children's Fund.
The second edition began on Sunday night with Tyler calling the action as race favourite Motor Shark and driver Paul MacKenzie journeyed first over and edged ahead of pacesetter Twilite Zone at the third quarter mark en route to a two-length victory in 2:00.4. David O'Brien trains the four-year-old Cams Card Shark gelding for P.E.I. owners Tommy Collings and Arthur Jay. Royal Canvas edged out Twilite Zone and Destino in a close finish for second-place honours.
Announcer Idol continues next Sunday, January 18 at Flamboro with Bob Cowan of CHCH scheduled to take over the announcer's booth for the third race call.
Sunday's $7,000 Preferred 3 Pace for horses and geldings went to wire-to-wire winner Lucky Nadotremblay and trainer/driver Anthony MacDonald in 1:57.4. The five-year-old Blissfull Hall gelding held off the pocket-pulling Get Around Town for the three-quarter-length victory while Cobble Beach rounded out the top three finishers. The five-year-old son of Blissful Hall, who now boasts back-to-back wins at Flamboro, is owned by Quebec's Marcel Gladu and Roger Bourgeois.
