A couple of months ago, a major North American racetrack got into some figurative hot water when its lighting system turned off during the running of a race. Although the lights didn't turn off, another scary incident recently took
place.
The Mainichi Daily News has reported that during a race on January 7 at the Kasamatsu racetrack in Kasamatsu, located in Japan's Gifu Prefecture, drivers of two maintenance tractors, who thought the race had already finished, entered the course and began levelling the ground while the horses were still racing their second lap and approaching the finish line.
Horses and jockeys dodged the vehicles and nobody was hurt. Roughly 7.9 million yen had to be refunded after the race was 'annulled.'
The article explains that the prefectural horse racing association apologized afterward, stating, "We are very sorry for the trouble we have caused to horse racing fans and other people."
