After concluding her three-year-old campaign with a conditioned win at Woodbine Mohawk Park, Lefkada ($4.90) opened 2020 in victorious fashion, defeating six foes in the featured $8,500 Preferred 3 Trot on Wednesday (Jan. 1) at The Raceway at Western Fair District.
A two-time Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots winner, Lefkada and driver Scott Wray used the entire first turn to seize the lead, pushing clear of early pacesetter Scene A Magician (Greg Dustin) at the conclusion of a :29.2 first quarter. Lefkada enjoyed a three-furlong breather after exerting to clear, coasting through a 1:00 half before facing a sustained first-over push from Twofourroadie (Brett MacDonald) on the second circuit.
Twofourroadie advanced out of fourth to nudge Lefkada to three-quarters in 1:29.3, but stalled midway on the final turn. Meanwhile, Lefkada was driven out at head-stretch and kept pocket rival Scene A Magician — who lunged up the pegs in the final sixteenth — a half length at bay in 1:59.2. Twofourroadie held third after levelling off.
Trainer Jack Wray co-owns six-time winner Lefkada with Thomas Wray and Douglas Dunbar.
