Goodbye, Garry

I heard of Garry Phillips’ passing first thing this morning, and while driving to work a few hours later, I retraced my last conversation with him.

It was a few months ago, at the OHHA offices, following a meeting. Garry was there working diligently — as always — on OSAS business. He made a joke. I made a joke. He said something nice. I said something nice back at him that complimented his unbridled enthusiasm for the biz. I left the building and never saw him again.

I’ve certainly never had occasion to say anything but niceties to Garry, but occasionally when I open my mouth, something stupid and/or inappropriate falls out. Thank God this wasn’t one of those times. On this occasion, my parting words were actually reflective of my true affinity for someone who gave his heart and soul to the industry he adored.

Garry worked tirelessly for the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society for many years. I worked with him on several projects, and to be frank, was often baffled by his complete lack of darkness. If Garry was ever less than thrilled about anybody, I never heard him convey it — a pretty rare and admirable quality in itself.

Harness racing has lost a devoted cheerleader and friend, but his passion and efforts live on in the good work of OSAS. Take a moment today to think of Garry and the very positive energy he invested in this industry. We were lucky to have him.

It's hard to fathom the fact that Garry has passed. It wasn't long ago that we were all together at one of our regular board meetings.

His generosity and dedication to the horses and obvious love for racing are just a few admirable qualities Garry possessed. He is the nicest, most sincere person you could ever meet and I am grateful to have had the pleasure of getting to know him.

He will be truly missed but never forgotten.

I just read about Garry's passing, as well.

He was always front and center when it came to any of the OSAS initiatives. I know how much he loved the horses, and I know he'll have a good seat to keep tabs on them from now on.

Thoughts and prayers to Garry's family and friends.

Garry Phillips was everything you said and more... My right hand man always there when I and OSAS needed him.. I have lost a great friend and my last meeting with Garry was when he bought me fudge at Kawartha last year.... and we joked about how I wasnt sweet enough! godspeed Garry....it sure wont be the same without you!!
