Week Two Of Training

Published: March 16, 2009 08:28 pm EDT

More cold miserable weather on PEI last week but our track was much better on Tuesday and Saturday for 2 sets of double headers with Shadow Play, the fastest miles being in 2:32 and 2:30. All is well and he is even more happier in the barn now and maintaining his weight very well (actually a little too fat). Our paddocks were iced up and we were unable to turn out till Sunday past and Shadow enjoyed that very much. We started to bandaging him again when he gets put away, after giving him a chance all winter to get the wrinkles out of his legs. Two more sets of doubleheaders are scheduled this week and all the March stake payments were made. Leather rim pads were added to his shoes again last week - they had become a fixture with him after the first heat of the jug - and aluminums will be added once Spring arrives (if it does).

Looking forward to following Shadow Play this summer, any word on what races he's paid into?. Any word on the three two year olds you bought at the sales last fall. Any chances any of them might be racing away or on the Island?

Shadow is paid to all races for aged horses except some of the early ones since he won't be ready. There is a tough highly concentrated schedule in particular in June, July and August and early September where there are 12 straight weeks of eliminations and finals for all the big money events. After that the number of money races drops off dramatically in September, October, November. Three x 2 year olds are all training well (2:35 range), one in particular seems really good (the Bettors Delight colt)and like in previous years if all goes well, they will all qualify and perhaps race once or twice at the CDP to find out their ability before potentially shipping out to Ontario.
