Dewey gets a big test

It was bound to happen to Dewey sooner or later.

No, I’m not talking about the defeat. We all basically knew that was inevitable. (Or did we?) It’s the old horseman’s credo that if you show ‘em enough racetrack, they all get beat sooner or later.

So that was sure to happen, but what’s happened to Dewey in the final of the Canadian Trotting Classic is just a matter of the odds catching up to him. Dewey drew post 10.

That makes things tougher, of course, but Ray Schnittker’s got a long way to the first turn at Mohawk to get Dewey to the front or in good position.

Why do I say it was just a matter of time? Post position draw is about the fairest thing in racing. It’s simply luck of the draw. Theoretically, every good post should be balanced by a bad post.

Of course, it doesn’t always work out that way. Some horses seem to draw bad in big races. Their owners and trainers are often quick to complain about it. (They’re not quite so vocal in trumpeting their good luck when they draw inside.)

Dewey has raced eight times this year. His post positions have been 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 5. That hasn’t hurt him any, but I’m not sure that the results of his earlier races would have been any different if he’d drawn posts 7-10. Keep in mind, too, that while he got the rail in the Hambo final, he earned the right to pick that position by winning his elim.

So how will Dewey do from the never-never land starting position of post 10? We’ll find out Saturday. Great horses bounce back from defeat and I think Dewey can overcome post 10.

His defeat and his post make the CTC final far more interesting than watching a walkover.

I think Dewey has got something left for Crazed and the rest of the field. I watched the rerun. Ray Schnittker didn't whip Dewey as Crazed pulled along side. I think Ray knew the streak had to end sometime and better here than in the final. The ten hole will be tough but Dewey can do it!

if anyone watches the replay of the hambo , the locked in horse was getting to dewey at the wire , he ran out of racetrack. trouble is when outstanding horses race for large purses, many are reluctant to soften up the favorite early, as someone else gets the bacon.... tyhat is how the game is raced now adays/ jk
