Dewey and what filly?

Published: December 20, 2008 04:36 pm EST

Undoubtedly Dewey will be voted the tops in his class of three-year-old trotters. We've seen some dandies in recent years---Majestic Son, Glidemaster, Chocolatier, Donato Hanover and now Dewey.

What sophomore trotting filly is likely to wear the crown? Lantern Kosmos? Hambo Oaks winner Creamy Mimi? Breeders Crown star Kadealia? Anyone think Bella Dolce deserves support? Stage Show? Poster Pin Up?

Let me know you thoughts? And how does Dewey rank against the stars of the past?

I've known Ray Scnittker and his dad Warren since Ray was unlicensed high school kid, and Warren had some horses at Buffalo and Batavia trained by Henry Zakrezewski. The sport has changed ions since then, and the name of the game is now called "managing" your horse. Ray has rolled with the punches, learned the new rules as the game evolved, and maybe even made a few rules of his own. But the job he (and his crew) did with Dewey was suburb. (Until that last road trip.)

He was beat a few times, but if you go to the gate often enough, even the handful of genuine "SUPERHORSES" (Standardbred and T-bred) get beat. I won't allow myself to compare horses that never raced against each other, even if they raced within a few years of each other. Cantab, Windsong's Legacy, Donato and Dewey, for example. It's pure speculation and there is no right or wrong. Almost guaranteed to get people up in the rigging and "debating" in loud voices though. ("Positive is 'sure' at the top of your lungs.")

I couldn't begin to speculate who will be the 3 year old trotting filly of the year. Seems like every filly exceot Snow White took turns beng brilliant, then being disappointing. Unfortunately, Snow White spent the year in the "Major Disappointment" end of the spectrum.

Here's hoping that Snow White comes away from The Meadowlands sale going to a good home and she can begin her new career in the breeding shed on a positive--and successful-- note. Who would you like to see her bred to? It'd be close, but I'd like to see her in the court of Cantab Hall. Or Broadway hall....

Happy Holidays everyone!!!! May 2009 be full of love, laughter, good health and harness racing!
