Red Cup Classic Celebration Presented at CDP Saturday

The second annual Red Cup Classic, presented by the new Lotto 6/49, returns to Red Shores’ Charlottetown Driving Park Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

The Red Cup Classic is a festival-style event with racing, live entertainment, prize giveaways, trackside presentations and promotions over two days at Island racetracks.

Panacotta has drawn the rail in the Red Cup Classic feature for driver Blaine Baglole and owner Shane Baglole of Cornwall. The morning-line favourite is Veronicavermillion from Post 4 for Brian MacPhee. The Neil Bambrick trainee has been very sharp with performances in the 1:55 range. This will be a tough assignment. Wild Dragon (Kenny Arsenault) and Balanchine (Ron Matheson) are in the race but will have to start from outside posts. The field also includes Brodys Leona (Corey MacPherson), Nobestbfor (Walter Cheverie), Blue Star Outlaw (Jason Hughes) and Lucky Encounter (Norris Rogers).

Lyrical Lindy, owned by Bill Andrew of Calgary, Alberta, is the morning-line favourite at 5-2 in the evening’s trot class. Corey MacPherson will be in the driver’s seat for trainer Blaine McKenna.

The Mr. Trot Challenge standings have been posted with Marc Campbell still leading the way at 114 points. Walter Cheverie is second with 109, Ron Gass is third with 100 while Willie Murphy is fourth with 96. The challenge, presented by Johnston’s Salads and Keybrand Foods Inc, awards points on a 10-7-5 basis for a 1-2-3 finish with trotters at Charlottetown.

They will be trying to knock off favourite Dirt Track Momma from the Jonah Moase stable. The power-packed roster also includes JK Special, General Luckypercy, Doober Hoozzitz and Skylark Hanover.

The program also has the Joe O’Brien Memorial stakes with two divisions of grassroots going for $6,600 each and two gold splits at $10,000 apiece.

So Much To Say, owned by Colleen Dickie and trained by Tom Weatherbie, and Windemere Ron (Gilles Barrieau) are leading candidates in the grassroots while Forever Paradise, from the red hot Kevin MacLean stable, and Scarlet Chaser with John Holmes picking up the catch-drive are favourites in their respective gold divisions.
