Gayle Ecker, the Director of Equine Guelph, is the instructor for this course. Ecker developed the Equine Studies program that provides over 20 online courses, and has dedicated her energies to advancing the equine industry through education and communications on health, welfare and safety.

"Horse Care & Welfare" is one of five short courses on Equine Guelph’s Horse Portal featuring practical, flexible learning, and available this fall to Standardbred Canada’s members at the 15 per cent partner discounted rate of $80.75.

For those who have never taken an online course before, no prior online learning experience is required, and the course format is flexible with “24/7” access available.

The main objective of the "Horse Care & Welfare" course is to help all horse owners and caretakers develop the knowledge on horse care as well as specific information on Requirements and Recommended Practices presented in the Canadian “Equine Code.”

Based on the National Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Equines, this course considers the care and management of horses in terms of the Five Freedoms of animal welfare:

1. Freedom from Hunger
2. Freedom from Discomfort
3. Freedom from Pain and Injury
4. Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour
5. Freedom from Fear and Distress

It is a partnership platform for the equine community, available to everyone in the equine industry. The Horse Portal has quickly grown to include youth organizations, international safety associations, and horse racing partners including Standardbred Canada, Ontario Racing, Horse Racing Alberta and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.
