Answering all 31 questions and earning 80 points out of a possible 120, Jeff Crawford of Woodstock, ON was the grand prize winner in the Ontario Sires Stakes Trivia Contest.

Crawford and four guests will enjoy the Grassroots Championships at Mohawk Racetrack on Sept. 26 from the comfort of the Terrace Dining Room with $50 each to wager on their favourites. In addition, Crawford received an Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) 40th Anniversary jacket and an OSS ball cap.

A total of 63 OSS trivia buffs participated in the month-long contest. Crawford edged out Susan Hughes, who answered all 31 questions for a total of 79 points. As the runner-up, Hughes received an OSS 40th Anniversary jacket, OSS ball cap and a $50 wagering voucher for the Grassroots Championship event on Sept. 26. Third-place finisher Shawn Crawford, who answered 29 questions for a total of 74 points, received an OSS 40th Anniversary jacket and OSS ball cap.

“We were thrilled with the number of people who played,” said Lisa Hocking, Programs, Marketing and Communications Coordinator for Ontario Horse Racing. “We looked forward every morning to seeing who answered correctly.

“For some of the questions, there was a fair bit of research involved, but there was just one question that eluded everyone: ‘How many horses have won Ontario Sires Stakes division titles at both two and three?’” Hocking added.

The answer to that question, and the other 30, along with complete standings are posted on the Ontario Horse Racing website.

In addition to the top two point earners, Norm Files, Shelly MacMillan, Rebecca Titus, Tara Spach and Tom Welsh also answered all 31 questions and will receive an OSS ball cap for their active participation. Fifteen other contestants answered at least 15 questions and will receive an OSS pen for their efforts.

The Ontario Sires Stakes Program was established in 1974 to promote the breeding of Standardbred horses in Ontario and provide economic incentives for breeders, owners and trainers to breed, buy and race horses in Ontario.
