Hanover Raceway has announced it will host a race named in honour of former O.S.S. trotting sensation and upcoming Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee A Worthy Lad during its Saturday, August 28 program
.
A Worthy Lad, who starred in the Ontario Sires Stakes program in 1989 and 1990, won the first 30 starts of his career for trainer/driver William “Bud” Fritz. Joe Johnson of Oldcastle, Ontario bred and owned the son of Worthy Bowl, who banked $446,858 before being sold and exported overseas.
A Worthy Lad’s induction will be held on August 19 at the Mississauga Convention Centre. A Worthy Lad will join not only Fritz in the Hall of Fame, but his former stablemate Apaches Fame, as well.
Hanover Raceway will celebrate A Worthy Lad’s induction with a special race on Saturday August 28. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a collector’s class honouring A Worthy Lad.
Hanover is also gearing up for its eighth annual All Trot Day, featuring the Walker Memorial Invitational Trot, named after Alan and Viola Walker of Owen Sound.
Alan was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 1996. During his career he captured several driving titles at both Greenwood Raceway and Garden City, including 1963 when he achieved an impressive UDR of .490.
He was also known for his work as a trainer with many great trotters including Macduffs Lassie, Clement Hanover, Cadenza and Invasion. In 1967 he enjoyed his finest moment when he guided Garma Alert to victory in the Walnut Hall Stakes in Lexington, Kentucky, where the filly established a four-heat world record.
