Trotting Sophomores To Spar In KY

On the heels of America’s classic trotting race, The Red Mile will play host to some of the nation’s top trotting sophomores as they begin their divisions of the Kentucky Championship Series on Sunday (Aug. 8).

The glamour boys open the 10-race card with a quartet going to post. Half of the field belongs to trainer Anette Lorentzon. She sends a pair by European sire Love You: Tangled Love, off a 1:52.4 win in the series’ prep on July 26, along with Rattle My Cage, who enters off an eighth-place finish in the Hambletonian eliminations. Dexter Dunn retains the drive on Tangled Love while Andrew McCarthy steers Rattle My Cage. Uncle AJ, starting from Post 1 for trainer Jack Gray Jr. and driver James Stiltner II, and Chris Beaver trainee Kildare King complete the competitors.

A full field of three-year-old trotting fillies compete in their lone $40,000 dash, which includes two exiting the Hambletonian Oaks elimination. Beltassima, a filly by Trixton, starts from Post 2 for trainer Tony Alagna and driver Andrew McCarthy off a sixth-place effort in her elimination and has earned slight favouritism on the morning line with a 4-1 listing. Dutiful also exits the Oaks eliminations but will go as one of the race’s longshots for trainer Jonas Czernyson and driver Matt Kreuger.

The field also features Adirondack, a daughter of Father Patrick whose dam Mission Brief became the fastest two-year-old trotting filly over the red clay back in 2014. Adirondack enters off four on-the-board finishes including a pair of wins, one coming in an open event and the other in a $46,450 division of the Tompkins-Geers. Dexter Dunn pilots the Nancy Takter trainee from Post 9 and is listed as the 9/2 second choice on the morning line.

Sunday’s card also features four $20,000 divisions of the Kentucky Commonwealth Series with two for the colts and geldings and two for the fillies. First-race post time is at 1:00 p.m. (EDT).
