Longtime horse owner Bill Fleming of Clinton, Ont. passed away suddenly on Wednesday, August 4. He was 80 years of age
.
Fleming owned and operated Fleming Feed Mill in Clinton, an enterprise he established in 1967 that aimed to target the area's growing poultry industry. The mill, which now also produces horse feed, grew from selling 20 to 30 tonnes of feed a week to over 2,500 tonnes per week.
He purchased his first horse in 1973, Quick Almahurst, with Ken Hardy. That son of Golden Money Maker would go on to win $83,000 and take a record of 2:00.2 in a time trial at age three.
As an owner of horses, Fleming raced under the stable name Huron Fleming Broiler Farm and used the HF prefix. He campaigned many horses over the subsequent years with Hardy, Tom Strauss and Butch Elliott including the good Tarport Count mare HF Alice who earned $131,000 in her career with a record of 1:57.2 taken at Flamboro Downs.
Fleming’s sons, Ian - a director of Standardbred Canada - and Jim are both active in the harness racing business. He is also survived by his wife Margaret, daughter-in-law Jennifer and grandchildren Will and Claire.
Visitation will take place Friday, August 6 at the Fleming Feed Mill from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. The Funeral service will be held at the Clinton United Church on Saturday, August 7 at 11 a.m.
Donations to the Clinton Public Hospital Foundation or the charity of one’s choice would be appreciated.
