Fans of two-year-old trotters will be turning into Thursday evening’s card of racing at Woodbine Mohawk Park as the oval hosts eliminations for this year’s Peaceful Way and William Wellwood Memorial.
Fourteen fillies will spar in a set of $30,000 Peaceful Way eliminations, with Dicentra figuring to be one of the main threats in the first elimination.
The Luc Blais trainee will be teamed up with driver Bob McClure, and together they’ll start from Post 6 in Race 1. From six starts this season the daughter of Muscle Mass-Dicent No has manufactured a 3-1-0 record while banking more than $110,000 for Determination of Montreal, QC. She’ll look to double up following her 1:57.2 triumph in a recent division of the Champlain Stakes.
Blais will send out the undefeated Donna Soprano in the second elimination, and again it will be Bob McClure to team the trotting lass. She’ll start from Post 3 in Race 6 for owner Determination of Montreal, QC. Three starts have translated into three wins for the daughter of Donato Hanover-Windsong Soprano who has racked up more than $95,000 in earnings to date.
Canadian fans will get their first live look at Southwind Tyrion, who totes a perfect record into the first $30,000 elimination of the William Wellwood Memorial. Ake Svanstedt trains the son of Muscle Hill-Taylor Jean who is perfect in his first three starts. Yannick Gingras has been recruited to drive the colt from Post 2 in Race 2. He’s banked over $122,000 to date.
The team of trainer Luc Blais, driver Bob McClure and owner Determination will be front and centre in the second William Wellwood Memorial elimination thanks to the presence of the undefeated Macho Martini, who will start from Post 6 in Race 5. The son of Muscle Mass-Peach Martini has faced the gate six times in his freshman season, and the competition has yet to find the chink in his armour.
Winning the William Wellwood Memorial earns not only a great payday, but it also earns a ticket to the inaugural edition of the Mohawk Million – an event that could turn out to be a co-ed classic considering the depth in this year’s filly division.
