The outside post could be problematic, but Bugsy Maguire will take his shot at the Monday afternoon (Sept. 2) Preferred Pace on a holiday card at Red Shores at Summerside Raceway. The 12-dash Labour Day program kicks off at 1 p.m. Atlantic time.
Bugsy Maguire is shouldered with the outside post seven in the $2,900 Preferred Pace, carded as race 11, with Jason Hughes aboard the Wade Sorrie trainee for owner Walter Simmons. The five-year-old son of Bettors Delight was a sixth-place finisher his last time out, but was a convincing winner the start prior in 1:53.2 in the $10,000 Birthplace of Confederation Series final at Red Shores Charlottetown during Old Home Week.
Hughes will have his work cut out for him in the field of iron-tough pacers, as Nogreatmischief gets the respect of morning-line favourite from post four for trainer-driver Walter Cheverie after a third-place finish in his latest. Dangle Ona Dime (Corey MacPherson) has been razor sharp all season and just saw his top-two streak end on Aug. 24. Prior to that, he had paced consistently in the 1:55-1:56 range while never finishing worse than second to contribute to his 13 top-two finishes from just 16 seasonal starts.
Also in the field is Coasttocoastshark (Devon Wallace), Mantario (Alex Sobey), Heartland Eclipse (Darren Crowe) and Red Magician (Adam Merner).
The afternoon's back-up class lines up in the finale, with Doctor Royal dropping well back in class to draw post six. The Dawn Ellis Abbott trainee shows Invitational company straight down his card and just competed in the $20,000 James (Roach) MacGregor Gold Cup and Saucer consolation, where he finished seventh. Crowe will drive the pacer on Monday; they take on seven foes including Mando Fun (Dale Spence) and Rusty Riley (Paul Langille).
