Daniel James McDougall passed away suddenly in Vienna, Austria on Aug. 9, 2026, at the age of 66, following a courageous eight-year battle with cancer. In his final moments, he was surrounded by the love of his family, both near and far.
Dan was born in Winnipeg, Man. on Dec. 8, 1959, the eldest of three brothers, and moved with his family to Calgary, Alta. in 1976. His love of learning led him to a career in education, earning degrees from the University of Calgary and Gonzaga University before spending more than 30 years as a teacher, coach and administrator with the Calgary Catholic Separate School Board.
Dan taught International Baccalaureate biology and social studies, but what mattered most was the way he connected with people. He brought his love of sports, music and theatre into his work, initiated BOBstock, the school's battle of the bands, and formed lasting friendships with colleagues. He also inspired younger teachers, including his brother Dick, with whom he shared the joys, challenges and stories that came from their careers in education.
Music was central to Dan's life. He taught himself guitar at 16 and went on to perform with rock bands in Calgary, play multiple instruments, sing and write music. Music brought many people into his life who became lifelong friends. His creativity also found expression in his wonderful sense of humour, especially in the silly songs he made up about his dogs and everyday life.
Dan's curiosity took him around the world. He travelled across five continents, visiting places including the Galapagos Islands, Machu Picchu and the Great Barrier Reef. Bali held a special place in his heart, and he returned several times to visit friends there.
In 1997, Dan became a father to Haley, one of the greatest joys of his life. They travelled together, attended sporting events and shared many memorable experiences, including the years he coached her volleyball team. He was immensely proud of her and the woman she became. Their bond was one of the most important relationships in Dan's life, and his love for Haley will remain an enduring part of his legacy.
Dan met Helena in 1999 while performing music. Their friendship grew into a relationship in 2008, and they began sharing a home in 2009. After 15 years together, they married at the Calgary Zoo in 2023. Helena was Dan's wife, companion and best friend, and together they built a life filled with music, family, adventure and laughter.
Dan embraced Helena's family as his own. He shared a special bond with her daughters, Amanda (Danni) and Kayla (Jeremy), and loved their children: Lucas, Liam, Isabelle, Jeorge, Noah, Adeline, Everly and Maeve. His beloved dogs, Ozzy and Frankie, were cherished members of the family and a source of comfort throughout his illness.
After retirement, Dan continued to create through acting and filmmaking. He performed in productions throughout Alberta and the United States and took particular pride in producing his own short films.
Dan also shared a passion for horse racing with his brother Don, becoming a part-owner of racehorses. He loved jogging the horses himself and treasured his time in the backstretch with the horses and the racing community. He also loved the excitement of race day and the thrill of seeing one of their horses make it to the winner's circle. Sharing this part of his life with his brother Don made it all the more special.
Dan's father and brothers, Don and Dick, were among his closest friends. They competed in fantasy sports leagues and hockey pools until Dan's final days, their rivalry reflecting a deep and enduring family bond.
Dan lived with curiosity, creativity, humour and a deep love of life. He was an educator, musician, actor, filmmaker, traveller, husband, father, brother and friend. He made people feel welcomed, encouraged, entertained and loved. His music, stories and generosity will continue through the people and communities he inspired. To those who knew him best, he will be remembered most simply and most dearly for being Dan.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Helena; his daughter, Haley (Chace); his father, Dan; his brothers, Don and Dick (Jennifer); his nieces and nephews, Robyn, Blake, Abby and Burke; Amanda (Danni) and her children, Lucas, Liam and Isabelle; Kayla (Jeremy) and her children, Jeorge, Noah, Adeline, Everly and Maeve; his beloved dogs, Ozzy and Frankie; and the many relatives, friends, musicians, colleagues, former students and members of the acting and racing communities whose lives he touched.
Dan was predeceased by his mother, Sheila, in 2024; his uncles, Jim, Dave and Blake; and his aunt, June.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive SE, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, at 11 a.m with a Reception to follow. Family and friends are warmly invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of Dan's life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dan's memory to the Prostate Cancer Centre or Canadian Blood Services.
