How Will You Recognize Your Caretaker?

For the past two years, Standardbred Canada, in cooperation with racetracks, associations and industry partners across the country, hosted and presented National Caretaker Appreciation Day events.

Due to COVID-19, things are much different this year and although protocols won’t allow for many of the past years’ recognition and reward items to be put in place, it’s still important that the industry recognize our hardworking caretakers across the country.

This year’s official NCAD event dates are September 18 – 20. We’re taking many events virtual and the majority of the recognition will be done via web, social media, broadcasts and video streams.

Owners, trainers, drivers, breeders, and all facets of the industry have supported this event and this year, it’s probably more important than ever to recognize and show our appreciation for the caretakers keeping our horses healthy and safe while training and racing under unusual circumstances and protocols.

You may not be able to see your horses or their caretakers in person but have you given some thought to what you can do to show your appreciation to the person caring for your horse, working nights, weekends and holidays, and making sure your horse is fit, healthy and happy, while keeping himself / herself healthy and COVID free?

Here are a few ideas on how you can say ‘thank you” to your caretaker, whether they are racing, working at the farm or training centre:

  • Refreshments – drop off donuts or muffins and coffee to the stable* (if your stable is allowing visitors or have it delivered)

  • Host a Stable BBQ or contribute to a delivered catered lunch

  • Give them a day off with pay or a bonus

  • Give them a thank you card along with a gift card of your choice.

  • Purchase a win photo for them of one of the horses they care for, the next time it wins.

  • Send your thank you video for your caretaker to SC.

And encourage the caretaker of your horse to submit their favourite horse photo and a short write up for a chance to win a great prize package. The deadline to enter is August 30.
