Dr. Michael 'Mike' Weber Passes

It has been announced that Dr. Michael Paul ‘Mike’ Weber, who spent three decades working with the Canadian Pari-Mutuel Association, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, July 6 at St Marys Memorial Hospital at the age of 71.

Mike is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Lorna (née Culp). Adored father and father in law of Chris (Jennifer), Kendal (Stephen), and Jane (Simon). Beloved grandfather of MacKendrick, Aberdeen, Jeremy and Elliot. Fondly remembered by his sisters Marilyn (Bob) Zettler and Linda (Jim) Schmidt, sister in law Marg, extended families and friends. Predeceased by his mother Eileen, father Leo and brother Tom.

Mike was well respected professionally for his integrity and expertise in the field of equine research. He graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1971. Mike spent 34 years with the CPMA where he was Manager of Veterinary Services. He officially retired in 2013. Dr. Weber was instrumental in developing medication withdrawal guidelines to assist participants in the horse racing industry. These guidelines are still being used worldwide.

Dr. Weber had a strong commitment to the racing industry and to providing as much assistance as needed to racing participants and racehorse veterinarians to keep the sport clean. Dr. Weber also volunteered on the Equine Canada Equine Medication Control Committee and was a key advisor in the development of new rules. He helped Equine Canada to establish an excellent relationship with the testing laboratory and to have reliable guidelines which provided veterinarians with an improved ability to treat health issues in performance horses. Dr. Weber received an OAEP Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.

Mike’s knowledge, wit and love of conversation will be widely missed. His family would like to thank the team of doctors, nurses and staff at St Marys Memorial Hospital for all their care and compassion.

Cremation to take place. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name of Mary Parish, located on the northeast corner of Peel St. N. and Widder St. E. St. Marys, on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. An Open House reception will take place in the Community Hall at the St. Marys Pyramid Recreation Centre, 317 James St. S., from 4 – 6 p.m. Interment in St. Marys Cemetery at a later date. In 1965 as undergrads at U. of T. we often would catch the Gray coach to Mohawk. R.I.P. Mike after such a distinguished career as described above. Our sincere condolences to Lorna and family.
