The winners of the 2017-2018 SOA of NY/Yonkers Raceway Jo Ann Hertlein Memorial Scholarship and their families were at Yonkers Raceway on Saturday, July 29 to receive their awards.
First-place winner John McDermott Jr. was awarded the $5,000 top prize scholarship. Christopher Regina received the second-place prize of $3,000, and Oleyna Hauser earned the third-place scholarship for $2,000.
This year’s scholarship was named in memory of Jo Ann Hertlein, a longtime office administrator at the SOA of NY who passed away in December. Members of the Hertlein family were also in attendance to congratulate the winners.
The annual SOA/Yonkers Raceway scholarships are awarded to SOA members, or members of their immediate families, or to covered individuals (backstretch personnel) or a member of their immediate families, for study beyond the high school level. The recipient is chosen on the basis of merit and financial need.
