Freddie Has His Work Cut Out For Him

Freddie will have to overcome the outside post if he wants to notch a win Thursday evening (July 4) at Red Shores’ Charlottetown Driving Park. Although it’s not an ideal starting spot, the Majestic Son gelding has got the job done from the disadvantaged starting spot in the past.

The CDP’s 12-dash Thursday program will get underway at 6:30 p.m.

Freddie has been installed as the morning line for the $2,300 Open Trot (Race 9), even though he has been handicapped to the outside in the field of six (due to the fact that he has won his last two starts at this level). Marc Campbell trains and drives Freddie for owner Three Wisemen Stable of Kingston.

The CDP’s last four Open Trots have produced just two different winners, as Freddie won the last two and Star Photo (to be driven Thursday by Jason Hughes) won the two prior to that. Star Photo will start from Post 5 this week, while last week’s runner-up, Majian Tango, will line up in Post 2 for driver Jim Ripley.

Race analyst Les MacIsaac sees Freddie as the one to knock off as he searches for his third straight victory.

“Freddie has shown in his last two starts, both wins, that he has the versatility to handle any racing style,” MacIsaac said. “He'll probably have to come from off the pace again, but if he can pick up some good cover like he did last week a three peat is a good possibility.”

Scary Good (Gilles Barrieau), Professor Gordon (Gordie Hennessey) and Suicide Shift (Steven Shepherd) will round out the field for the Open Trot.

The top pacing race of the evening will take to the track for Race 12. Julep Hanover is the morning line choice from Post 2 and Kenny Arsenault has picked up the catch drive for owner-trainer Wade Myers of Charlottetown. The 10-year-old daughter of Western Ideal was a winner two starts back in 2:00.1 before being parked out in her latest outing.

The $1,400 Campbell Cousin Pace will line up for Race 6. The Dave Kelly-trained and driven Elm Grove Misty is the early favourite from Post 1 for owner Charlene Cypher of Springvale.
