After competing successfully against the very best three-year-old pacing colts in North America in two of the most prestigious events for the glamour boy division, Jet Airway will return to Ontario Sires Stakes Gold competition Monday night at Mohawk.
The Jeremes Jet colt has drawn post nine in the second of two $105,000 divisions, race nine. The other division goes as race seven. Randy Waples will be at the lines, a position he’s familiar with having driven the colt to a pair of victories last month including in the second Gold test for this group at Mohawk.
Jet Airway was a 1:50.4 winner in that Gold test, he did not race in the first Gold split for this group at The Raceway at Western Fair District. Instead he was pointed towards the $1 million North America Cup. He finished fourth in his elimination, timed in 1:49.4 but failed to advance to the final.
Earlier this month he once again competed against the elite of this division in the Meadowlands Pace. He was fourth in his elim but this time did make it to the $776,000 final where he collected the final cheque, worth $38,800.
“I thought for sure he had a chance to make the final. With that kind of a short field he likes to come from out of it most of the time, so I figured at the very least he could beat enough of them to make the final,” commented his driver, 25 year-old Marcus Miller following his elimination win.
“So that was the main goal, and he raced good, and he only got beat three lengths for the whole thing, plus he was parked the whole mile. He raced great and I think he’s a factor,” added Miller whose father Erv, one the sport’s leading trainers, conditions and co-owns the colt with Tangie Massey of Florida and Larry Anle and Paul Sunderhaus of Ohio.
Jet Airway was a $38,000 yearling purchase from the Harrisburg Sale. His breeder is Spring Haven Farm of Ohio. Lightly raced last year at two, the colt has three wins, one second and one third in nine starts so far this year for $112,000 in earnings.
Only one colt entered in Monday’s event has been victorious in both Gold evens this year. Boomboom Ballykeel won the season opener at London in 1:58.2 and was back in the winner’s circle following the second contest at Mohawk where he earned a new life best of 1:50.3.
The winner of last year’s Metro Final against the top colts in North America, Boomboom Ballykeel is three for six so far this year for $90,000 in earnings and $389,000 lifetime. Owned by breeder Ballykeel Racing of Tillsonburg, Ontario, the colt has post six in the first OSS test Monday night with Jonathan Drury slated to drive.
