Richard 'Gibby' Betts Passes

Standardbred horseman Richard 'Gibby' Betts, 97, formerly of Barnesville, Pa., passed away on July 16, 2020, at South Hills Rehabilitation and Wellness Center in Canonsburg, Pa.

He was born on November 25, 1922, in Quaker City, Ohio, to the late Dick and Margaret (Gibson) Betts.

Betts was a decorated World War II veteran with two bronze stars and a Purple Heart. He was a small business owner and trained Standardbreds including former world record holder Travalon Tom and stakes winning mare Adios Corinne, named after his beloved wife.

He was a member of the Barnesville First United Methodist Church and attended the Meadows Racetrack chaplaincy. He also enjoyed travelling the Grand Circuit with friends and family. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time with his grandsons.

Betts is survived by his grandsons, Timothy (Karlee), Andrew (Amanda) and Scott (Haley Sutton; great-grandchildren, Avary and Lincoln; daughter-in-law, Kim; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Corinne (Peters); son, Dr. Barry C.; daughter, Cynthia Austin; and sister, June (Betts) Foglesong.

Visitation will be Tuesday (July 21) from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home, 319 North Chestnut St., Barnesville, OH. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Friends Cemetery in Quaker City. Military honours given by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Meadows Racetrack Chaplaincy.
