On Wednesday, July 1, Hanover Raceway kicked off its qualifying event for the 2009 Trot Canada National

Handicapping Championship.

Close to 100 fans took part, picking one horse in each of five races, hoping their horse would finish first or second.

John Dametto of Guelph, Ont. had a great night, finishing with $60.90 after the first five races. Don Richards of Tara, Ont. is second with $55.40, while Harold Fleet of Hanover is third with $49.50. Jim Ruhl of Tara is fourth with $46.10, while Patricia Calhoun is currently fifth with $44.60.

The contest will continue each Wednesday night until the end of July when the top five finishers will earn prizes. The winner will advance to the $25,000 Trot Canada National Handicapping Championship.

Last year’s Hanover winner, Del Fagiani, ended up with $1,000 prize money at the '08 championship. The Trot Canada National Handicapping Championship will take place November 8 at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
