Over 30 freshman pacing colts will begin their quest towards the Atlantic Breeders Crown in stakes action Thursday evening (July 11) at Red Shores’ Summerside Raceway, as Governor’s Plate Week racing continues.

The 10-dash Thursday card will get underway at 6:30 p.m. and will feature the Atlantic Sires Stakes for two-year-old pacing colts. The rookies will contest a trio of ‘A’ divisions and two ‘B’ splits.

The first $9,080 ‘A’ division will line up for Race 3 and Tasteslikeanother has been favoured from the rail. Mark Bradley will be in the sulky for trainer Tom Weatherbie and Island owners Kyle and Joseph Gardiner, Mike Currie and Jerry MacKinnon. The two-year-old son of Articulator has made one lifetime start thus far in his young career, which resulted in a fourth-place finish at the Charlottetown Driving Park in which he paced in 2:01. Other top entrants in the field of five will be Tobins Rebel (to be driven by Gilles Barrieau) from Post 4 after a 15-length romp in his qualifier and Post 5 starter Scarlet Archer (Marc Campbell).

Race 6 will be another $9,080 ‘A’ division. Just like the opening ‘A’ split, the favourites will continue to start from Post 1. Krispy Crunch has drawn the rail and is heading into the tilt fresh off of a third-place finish in 2:00 in his debut for driver Mike McGuigan, trainer Len McGuigan and owner Jeff MacLennan of Charlottetown. Red Dirt Fulofhart (David Dowling) and Woodmere Rollex (Earl Smith) have also been pegged as top contenders.

Woodmere Rollhario headlines the final ‘A’ division (Race 9) for driver Campbell, trainer Kevin MacLean and owner Reg MacPherson of Stratford. The only two-year-old in the program with two pari-mutuel starts, Woodmere Rollhario has yet to finish worse than second in his career. Other top entrants are JJ Austin (Barrieau) and Woodmere Rollnpop (Clare MacDonald).

The $2,500 ATSS ‘B’ divisions have been carded as Race 5 and 8.

A field of trotters will take to the track for Race 4 in memory of Boyd Leslie. The field will be gunning for the lion’s share of a $1,750 purse. Wedgewood has been favoured for driver Gary Chappell and owner-trainer Glenn Claybourne of Charlottetown.

Race 7 will feature the Gentleman Jim’s Restaurant Pace in memory of Cam Cameron. Minor Wisdom will contest to tilt off of a 1:58.3 victory. Ambyr Campbell will command the daughter of American Ideal from Post 2 for trainer Trevor Hicken and owner Perry Burke of Grosse-Ile., Quebec.
