The Atlantic Sires Stakes season for two-year-old pacing fillies will get underway on Wednesday evening (July 11) as part of Governor’s Plate Week racing at Red Shores’ Summerside Raceway.
The 11-dash Wednesday card, which will start at 7 p.m., will feature three ‘A’ divisions and two ‘B’ divisions for the juvenile fillies.
The first of the $9,020 ‘A’ divisions (Race 2) will feature a compact field. Driver Walter Cheverie and trainer Joseph Baxter have already teamed up with Royaltywestho to dominate the three-year-old pacing filly division thus far in 2018. The duo will look for more success with another daughter of Westhwardho Hanover. Therealdeal will start from Post 2 in Race 2 for the combination of Baxter and Cheverie, while the Post 2 starter is owned by Jennifer Baxter and Gregory Francis of Windsor, Nova Scotia. Other top contenders are Lady N Paradise (to be driven by Dave Carey) and Woodmere Rio (Earl Smith).
The second ‘A’ split will line up for Race 8. Howmac Sabrina is the early favourite after having turned in a sharp qualifier in 2:01.4 with a :28.1 closing panel for driver David Dowling and trainer Earl Watts. The daughter of Malicious, who will start from Post 4, is owned by Brittany Watts of Warren Grove and Windemere Farms of Hampshire. Other top entries are Unapologetically (Walter Cheverie) and Dustylanbukinfuty (Corey MacPherson).
The final ‘A’ division will take to the track for Race 10, and the sales topper from last fall’s Atlantic Classic Yearling Sale is set to lead the way from Post 6. Woodmere Tango will have Clare MacDonald in the bike. The filly attracted a successful $28,000 bid as yearling. Morah Kerr of Greenfield, Nova Scotia holds the ownership papers for the daughter of Articulator. The filly paced a 2:01 qualifying performance at Truro Raceway in what is her only charted line to this point (she finished third in the mile). Other top entries in Race 10 are Skycrew (Vincent Poulton) and Magical Mistress (Adam Merner).
A pair of $2,500 ‘B’ divisions will line up for Races 4 and 6.
