It is with deep regrets that the family of Bruce and Shirley Cummings announce their recent passing.
Longtime horseman Bruce Cummings passed away on Friday, June 2, 2023 at the Oak Ridges Hospice in Port Perry, Ont., at the age of 87. He was predeceased by his wife Shirley Rose Cummings (nee Larocque), who passed away peacefully on March 13, 2023 at the Oak Ridges Hospice, after a short illness, at age 89.
Bruce was a lifetime resident of Scugog Township and well respected in the horse racing industry for 50 years. He bought his first racehorse in 1964 and retired from racing in 2014 due to health issues. He was a past director of the Ontario Harness Horse Association for Kawartha Downs and was inducted into the Scugog Sports Hall of Fame in 2017 as Pioneer of Sport. Shirley was a Standardbred owner and often attended the racetrack with Bruce on race days.
Loving parents of Jack and his wife Karen of Gananoque, Karin and her husband Peter MacIntyre of Janetville, Brenda and her husband Tom Tennyson of Cherry Valley, and Steven and his wife Jackie of Lindsay. They will be sadly missed by their grandchildren and great grandchildren, sisters and brothers, nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Cummings Farm, located at 12251 Old Simcoe Road in Port Perry, Ont., on Saturday, June 24, between 1-4 p.m.
