Longtime harness racing industry participant George E. 'Premer' Rutherford of Sydney, N.S. passed away suddenly on May 30, 2017 at the age of 50.

Born in Sydney on January 29, 1967, he was the son of Shirley (MacQuarrie) and the late David 'Creamer' Rutherford.

George was well known for his sense of humor; there was always a laugh when Premer was around. He was also known for his quick wit and 'one-liners'.

George was a laborer out West and a member of Local 92. For many years he also worked in Ontario with the horses.

Beginning at an early age, George found his passion and true love for horses and betting. He went on to look after a lot of really good horses over the years. George worked for some of the larger stables in Ontario and was always a helping hand when he returned home to Sydney to the local horsemen. Some of the most recent horses under George's care were Richards Thunder, Will It Fit and I Am Mint just to name a few.

When at home, George spent a lot of time at his favourite spot - "Prem's Palace" in Loch Lomond, sailing with the Captain waiting for the weekenders to show up. When not at the Bungalow, he spent a lot of time with the boys from the Hill and the guys from the track.

Besides his mother Shirley, he is survived by his son Jordan MacLeod, daughters Jessica MacLeod and Shanna MacDonald and Granddaughter Lexi. Also survived by his brother David (Slick) Joanne, sisters Charlene "Sharky", Dale (Steve) Coadic and Brenda (Joe) Johnstone and Rhonda Stanley. He also enjoyed the time he spent spoiling his niece Kaylee. He was also survived by and adored his several Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nieces and Nephews.

Besides his father he was predeceased by brothers Wayne and Allan (Dink).

George was a loving, kind, caring person who was a friend to all who knew him.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Saturday, June 3 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. with Memorial Service on Sunday, June 4 at 3:00 p.m. both from the SW Chant and Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra Street, Sydney.
