Longtime harness racing industry participant Ron Hutton of Markdale, Ont. passed away peacefully at Grey Bruce Health Services in Owen Sound on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 in his 85th year.

Ron was born September 18, 1938, in Collingwood, Ont. His parents had moved from the East Back line when they purchased the farm in Markdale when Ron was six years old. He attended both Markdale Public School and Centre Grey High School. In 1959 he married Barbara Stafford.

Ron worked at Central Ontario Cattle Breeders until he and his brothers Len and Paul went into business on the family farm and formed Hutton Stables, a Standardbred race horse and breeding farm that was synonymous for having “Rip” in the name of their horses.

Ron had a love for sports, enjoying hardball, curling and golf. He also became a member of Stuart Hunt Camp in 1962. He loved hunting and fishing and took every opportunity to do so with his many friends. Ron and two friends, Martin Olesen and Jim Cochlin, obtained their pilot license and purchased a 172 Cessna together.

Ron will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Beloved husband of 64 years to Barbara (Stafford). Loving father of Jill Cornelius (Leslie DeCastro) of Caledon and Darryl Hutton of Guelph. Cherished grandfather of Daniel Cornelius, Kaitlyn (Justin) Grant, Victoria (Nic) Hibler and Alexandra Hutton. Loved and remembered by his great granddaughters Aubrie and Charlette Grant.

Dear brother of Leonard (Lois) Hutton and Paul (Donna) Hutton all of Markdale. Ron is survived by brother in-law David (Eileen) Stafford of Shallow Lake, sister in-law Morag Stafford (Eric Reekie) of Thornbury and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Harold and Viola (Fawcett) Hutton and brother in-law Paul Stafford.

The family will receive friends at the Fawcett Funeral Cremation Reception in Flesherton on Friday, June 23 from 6-8 p.m. A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, June 24 at 11 a.m. at Annesley United Church, Markdale.

Cremation has taken place and Ron will be laid to rest at the Markdale Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Centre Grey Health Services Foundation would be greatly appreciated. Online donations and condolences at fawcettfuneralhome.ca.
