ON Gelding To Make East Coast Debut

Published: June 12, 2015 02:10 pm EDT

It has been announced that an Ontario-based Modern Art gelding that won over Woodbine Racetrack earlier this year has been sold and will be debuting on the east coast of Canada this weekend.

The Red Shores publicity department has released a preview for Summerside Raceway’s Sunday afternoon card (June 14) which states that Si Semalu was recently purchased by the Foxyhall Racing Stable of Summerside, PE. The five-year-old is scheduled to make his first east-coast start in Race 12 on Summerside’s 13-dash card.

Jason Hughes will condition Si Semalu, who has banked $152,515 in earnings during his career. The bay has been individually clocked in the range of 1:51.3 and 1:52 over Ontario tracks and has finished up his miles with some solid final quarters.

The ‘Foxyhall’ stable had a great year in 2014 with 24 victories. The addition of Si Semalu will add to an already powerful line-up of stable stars.

Si Semalu will start from Post 2 in Race 12, which has an estimated post time of 4:08 p.m. AST. He is set to take on Big Surf, one of the hottest local horses at the moment. Big Surf will be gunning for his third win in a row for trainer Trevor Hicken and driver Marc Campbell. The showdown will also includes Hicken’s other trainee, All Turain, who will get the services of Corey MacPherson this week. Motorino has landed on the pylons for Terry Gallant with American Terror and Outside The Wire completing the roster.

The action will be fast paced all afternoon with Bowyer Hanover listed as the 5-2 choice in Race 9 for Walter Cheverie and owner Ivan MacMillan. The veteran pacer was fourth in 1:56.4 in his last start, so the move three spaces to the left on the starting grid would help this week.

The release states that customers are enjoying new betting promotions at the track, including the Super High 5, Pik 3 and Pik 4. On-track players will be offered the Pick 5, Wild Horses tags on Races 2-13 with jackpots and ‘Set for Summer’ promo where customers have a chance to qualify to win weekly prizes with the grand prize of $1,000 a week for 10 weeks being drawn on the first day of summer, June 21.

First-race post time for Summerside’s Sunday card is 1 p.m.

Fields Set For Maritime Breeders Eliminations

Some of the best fillies and colts in the region will be competing in the Maritime Breeders Eliminations on Saturday (June 11) at Red Shores’ Charlottetown Driving Park.

There are several anticipated showdowns with horses putting their hot streaks on the line as others rally for a spot in next week’s final.

The first storyline emerges in Race 3 where Proven Desire has been named the morning line favourite for driver Marc Campbell. The son of Proven Lover, who is owned by Blair Hansen, Megan MacDonald and John Thomas, N.S., is two-for-two this season, which includes a new lifetime record of 1:58 that was taken at Summerside. BNGS Express (to be driven by Danny Romo) and Putnams Legacy (Bernard McCallum) are also listed as triactor candidates.

Also, Thebigbamtheory will take her winning ways to Charlottetown.

Thebigbamtheory will strut her stuff in Race 6 for Ernie Laffin and the ownership group of Kelly & Cameron MacEachern, Truro, NS. It won’t be a cake walk with Miss Oromocto having drawn into the dash along with Invader M, Woodmere Articblue and top stakes winner Woodmere Dancenart with the region’s top female driver Clare MacDonald making her 2015 debut at the capital oval.

One the biggest tests of the night will come in Race 8 when Dixieland Band (Campbell) goes up against Ultimately Handsome (Kenny Arsenault), who’s won four of his last five starts. Also, Arnold Dick (Terry Gallant), who has been attracting a strong fan base with his impressive miles, will be contesting the dash. Terry Gallant will do the driving for owners Vance Cameron, Terry and Michael Gallant of Summerside.

Three-year-old filly sensation Jann Down will head under the lights in Race 10. Gilles Barrieau will handle the daughter of Articulator for the Downey Stables of New Brunswick who recently hit the $50,000 mark in lifetime earnings after her third-place finish in the Atlantic Sires Stakes at Truro Raceway and victory in the Ruby Chappell Memorial in Summerside.

It could be a big night for trainer Kevin MacLean as well, as he will send Forever Paradise out for the evening’s top class for Campbell and owner Reg MacPherson. The star-studded field includes Waterside Light (Kenny Arsenault) Oh To Be Me (Gary Chappell), Cabo Pan Lucas (Danny MacDonald), Narragansett (Jason Hughes), JRs Hurricane (Ken Murphy), Tempo Seelster (Todd Walsh)

First-race post time for the card is 6 p.m.
