Former Standardbred owner Larry Edward Mayhew of Windsor, Ont. passed away on June 8, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was 78.
Larry grew up in Comber, Ont. He met the love of his life, Ellie, his wife of 50 years and together they raised their beautiful family. Loving father of Laurie Badman (Brad Tapping), late Trevor Mayhew (1980), Mike (Melba) Mayhew, Jeff Mayhew (Lindsey Kerr), and Marc (Deb) Mayhew. Cherished Papa of Trevor Badman, Amberly (Brock) Herman, Kristen Badman, Derek (Alisha) Badman, Kaylee (Ashten) Stanford, Riley Mayhew, Bode Mayhew, MacKenzie Mayhew, Zoey Mayhew, Zander Mayhew, Macie Mayhew, McKayla Mayhew, Emalee Mayhew, Peyton Mayhew, and Lily Mayhew. Great-Papa of Brett, Noah, Hannah, Lincoln, Baby Ellie (2023), and Lucy. Dear brother of Joanne Mayhew, Lenore (Ron) Pearson, Rosemary (late George) Dragich. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Larry is well known for his many years of coaching kids at hockey and baseball. He would do anything he could for his family. He would sacrifice things to make sure his kids could travel and get to all of their sporting events. Many of the kids he coached will remember some extra hockey sticks being thrown on the ice.
Larry loved the horse races. The family spent many days at the track. Over the years, he owned horses and even jogged one or two. One of his favourite horses was Mcrileymac, named after three of his grandchildren.
Larry struggled for many years with a gambling addiction. His family is so proud of him for overcoming this addiction and being clean for nearly 20 years.
Visitation will take place at Reaume Funeral Home Inc., 6 Canal St. W., Tilbury, ON, on Thursday, June 13 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with Funeral Service at 7:30 p.m. Cremation to follow. Donations to New Start Standardbreds would be appreciated by the family.
Larry will truly be missed by his family and many others who will think of him everytime they have a piece of pie.
