Hunterton Farm is saddened to report the passing of elite trotting broodmare Emilie Cas El. She was 29. Canada’s Horse of the Year in 1994, she was trained and driven during her racing career by Dustin Jones who called her a horse that changed his life.

“She was the best trotter I had ever trained at the time when I broke her. I just couldn’t believe how good she was, she was a natural,” said Jones of the Garland Lobell daughter bred by Angus Farms of Bedford, Quebec. Jones co-owned the talented miss with Wendell Cass.

During her rookie season she was undefeated winning all 13 of her races. She started out in Jones’ home province of Quebec, winning all of her races there (all stakes), and then came to Ontario where she swept the Canadian Breeders Championship equalling the track record at Mohawk.

Emilie Cas El, a full sister to three top trotting sires – Andover Hall, Angus Hall and Conway Hall - concluded her racing career in Europe in 1997. Her summary showed 55 starts (29-7-6) for $454,688 in earnings.

One of Hunterton’s top broodmares for many years, she’s best known for her 11th foal, a son of Muscle Hill who would go on to win the prestigious Hambletonian. In total Trixton won 12 of 19 career starts for $968,000 in earnings. Now a sire standing at Winbak Farm in Ontario, Trixton’s richest performers to date include O’Brien winner Evident Beauty ($890,000) and Play Trix On Me ($607,000).

Emilie’s bloodlines continue at Hunterton through her daughter Peaceful Kemp whose first foal, Venerate ($939,000) was last year’s Dan Patch award winner as two-year-old colt trotter of the year. The farm also has Emilie’s Credit Winner daughter and Breeders Crown winner Impressive Kemp, dam of Natural Kemp ($213,000) and Quality Kemp ($156,000) to date.

Emilie’s yearlings were coveted as nine were sold as yearlings for a total of $1,625,000. The highest priced was Trixton at $360,000. Her last foal arrived in 2015, and she had been enjoying a well earned retirement since then.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the connections of Emilie Cas El.
