Hippodrome 3R is all set to begin live Wednesday night harness racing this week (on May 13) with a first-race post time of 7 p.m. The track had raced on Tuesdays for the last few seasons and has made the change to Wednesdays for the 2015 season.
“We surveyed our race fans and it was agreed to try Wednesday night live racing,” said Vincent Trudel, general manager at Hippodrome 3R. “Hopefully it will become popular with our fan base.”
To find out who is the leading breeder of Standardbred horses in Quebec, all one needs to do is look at Hippodrome 3R’s fourth race (the card’s featured trotting race) on Wednesday.
Five of the nine horses in the race were bred by Les Ecuries SOS of Bedford, QC and five of the starters have ‘SOS’ in their name, which indicates that they were bred by the Les Ecuries farm.
Owned by Monalisa Pagliericci and Francine Morrissette, Les Ecuries has dominated the breeding ranks in Quebec for many years and have bred hundreds of racehorses.
The race favourite happens to not be a SOS-bred horse. That honour falls upon Erge Jack, who will start from Post 7 for driver Pascal Berube. The seven-year-old roan mare by On The Sonny Side, has shown improvement since last season, and despite being the older starter in the field she could live up to her morning line odds.
Other contenders in the race include Force Naturelle (PP2), SOS Ticket Master (PP5) and SOS Masters Boy (PP8).
