Sudbury Downs is poised for an exciting kickoff to the new season, which gets underway this Saturday night
.
More than three dozen local trotters and pacers qualified during the past week and a flood of entries were received from outside the immediate region.
Sudbury’s 2009 top trainer France “Frankie” MacLean will harness six horses for Paul “The Kid” MacLean. The morning line handicapper has listed Rocinante as his best chance for a victory in race three. In addition The Kid will also take on four catch drives.
Dave Dowling, the winner in every driving category last season, which included driving the winners of $539,947, has seven horses in-to-go and will climb aboard five others. He could be off to another great season if the odds makers are correct.
He’s selected as the early favourite to win the 10th race with his own five-year old gelding Chubby Chaser. Right back in the 11th race he takes a catch drive from trainer Mike Lamoureux aboard Mayas Girl. She is favoured for the win as well. In addition, Dowling has been selected as the most likely to finish in the runner-up spot with Check Le Look in the second, Frankie B Wilwin in race three and Tymal Devana in the fourth race.
Other drivers slated to drive more than 10 races on the 12-race card are Azilda’s favourite racing son, Gerry Belanger, along with Mike MacNeill, Mario Rivest, Paul and Wayne MacLean.
